Course Description

Welcome to the 5 W’s of Personalized Learning eCourse – The What, Who, WOW, Where, and Why

The companion book for this course is Make Learning Personal: The What, Who, WOW, Where and Why  that can be purchased through Corwin Press or through Amazon.

In this self-paced course there are five modules that include videos, resources, downloadable files and optional activities.  Each video introduces the content that is followed by resources, readings and downloadable files. The activities are optional since this is a self-paced course but are designed to extend your thinking about personalized learning.

Module #1:What is Personalized Learning?
Review the Personalization vs. Differentiation vs. Individualization chart, review the research, and take a position on what is and is not personalized learning.

Module #2: Who are your Learners?

Understand how learners learn best using Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Learn about the Personal Learner ProfileTM and Class Learning SnapshotTM, and why students need to be called learners.

Module #3: Wow! Teacher and Learner Roles are Changing!
Understand how teacher and learner roles change through the Stages of Personalized Learning Environments. Review the process teachers took to transform their environment to include learner voice and choice with examples and models about these changing roles.

Module #4: Where is Personalized Learning Happening?
Virtually visit flexible learning spaces, transformative models, global perspectives, and hear stories from schools and districts that transformed learning with opportunities for learners to have a voice and choice. Learn about CBAM to discuss your concerns and hopes about personalizing learning.

Module #5: Why Personalize Learning?
Reflect on the rationale for learners to become self-directed, independent, expert learners. Connect the dots of initiatives under Personalized Learning and create a rationale and action plan to personalize learning.

Testimonials

"I can't tell you how much this course has made me think much deeper into my practice and how though I am familiar with and use personalized learning in my room, there is so much more to learn and grow from. This course is well worth the time and provides great collaboration!" Lisa Treml Welch, K-1 co-teacher at KM Explore, Wisconsin

What an awesome course!! I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the experience and knowledge you two bring to Personalized Learning. I thought I knew what it was...but I was wrong. Your course walked me through in a very strategic and meaningful way. The concepts were well connected and allowed time for us to think through what we had learned. The activities were 'meaty" and at first I didn't think I could get it all done, but the course layout helped me tremendously. Thanks for sharing your expertise and true love of this topic with us. Latarsha Jones, Coach and Educational Consultant, Fulton County Schools, GA

I began my career in educational technology in 1983 where I set a vision that “Computers were going to be the great equalizer”. (In 1983 the word technology was not used.) I will tell you that I realized that vision and it is what drives my work in personalized learning. Today, I am an innovative leader, education technologist, keynoter, professional developer, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) consultant with over 30 years experience in creating learner-centered environments as a teacher, K-12 administrator, graduate instructor and consultant. I am passionate in empowering learners with tools, skills and learning strategies so they become independent self-directed learners, learners with agency, who are future ready for college, career and life. Last year I coined this phrase: “Every child on the planet is a learner”. With that understanding, I continue on my mission for educators to discover the learner in every child and to level the playing field for all learners. This past January, I joined Education Reimagined’s Pioneer Lab with other pioneering educators to help create a national movement to transform education to develop learner-centered environments everywhere.I am co-author of Make Learning Personal: The What, Who, WOW, Where and Why and How to Personalize Learning: A Practical Guide for Getting Started and Going Deeper.
